One person died early Friday morning after a suspicious car crash in St. Nicholas.
The crash happened shortly after 12:45 a.m. in the 2000 block of Olevia Street, which is at the Interstate 95 and Atlantic Boulevard split.
Sgt. Jay Farhat, of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit, said patrol originally responded to a report of a crash with life-threatening injuries. Once the victim arrived to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, the person was pronounced dead.
Sgt. Farhat said the determination was then made at the hospital that the person's injuries were not from the crash. According to detectives, the victim had a bullet or a stab wound.
JSO is now speaking with witnesses and persons of interest in hopes of learning more information.
"There was an individual seen leaving the scene by witnesses. We don't know who that individual is," Farhat said. "We're hoping that we have either somebody that may have left the scene or knows who left the scene and those people are being spoken to."
Sgt. Farhat was not able to tell Channel 4 exactly how many witnesses or persons of interest police were speaking with, but did said JSO is heavily relying on those people for more information.
It is believed that the person who died at Shands was the passenger. JSO does not know who the driver was.
Police said the investigation is in the early stages.
