1 killed in Columbia County house fire

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – Someone was killed in a house fire early Monday morning, and Columbia County investigators are working to identify the victim.

Firefighters were called to the fire in the 400 block of Southeast Alfred Markham Street about 4:10 a.m. When they arrived, the house was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found human and animal remains.

Detectives were called to the scene and will conduct a joint investigation with the State Fire Marshal's Office.

The source of the fire has yet to be determined, and deputies said there is no evidence to suggest foul play.

Deputies said the identity of the victim will be released once it is determined and next of kin has been notified.
