1 year later police still search for St. Augustine arsonist

4 buildings burned within 3 hours

It's been just over one year since a string of arson attacks in several historic buildings in downtown St. Augustine.

At the time, investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined state and local authorities in the search for the person or persons who set the fires.

But they still have no leads.

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said that since downtown St. Augustine is such a large area for tourists, it could've been anybody.

Within three hours four buildings, all more than 100 years old, were burned last June.

Investigators called three of the four fires arsons and Smith said that an investigation like this can be incredibly difficult.

"It could have been anyone, you know, it could have been someone who's related to the property. That's one thing they also investigate to see if there are common property owners, if it's the same landlord," Smith said.

The first fire hit a former architectural office that now sits vacant on Cordova Street. The second fire happened at a home on Saragossa Street that is now an empty lot.

Investigators don't believe the third fire was arson, but the fourth fire happened again on Cordova Street, 80 feet from the original fire.

The investigation did turn up a combustible accelerant outside one of the homes, which is just one piece of evidence that investigators are looking in to.

"They may have more than just the accelerant, they could maybe have clothes piled up the same way to start the fire. There's several different things that they look for," Smith said.

Even though officials are still looking for the arsonist, Smith said that now is the time that they need the public's help.

"Even if you're not quite sure but you think it may be that person, still call, they can investigate it. If it turns out not to be that person, then the person will be released," Smith said.

Anyone with any information about the fires is asked to call 877-NO-ARSON or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-8477. Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
