JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An assistant U.S. attorney in Jacksonville is facing vehicular homicide charges in connection to a deadly crash in Ponte Vedra Beach in March.
On Tuesday, the St. Johns County grand jury indicted Michael Gallagher, 50, in connection with the death of a woman who was a passenger in a Chevrolet Tahoe that was rear-ended March 25 on state Road A1A.
Coty Hastings, 23, was thrown from the vehicle and was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, but died two days later. Hastings' fiance, Thomas Flitter, 30, of Lexington, S.C., who was driving the SUV, suffered minor injuries.
Gallagher was not injured in the crash. He was accused of driving too fast and causing the crash.
Gallagher turned himself in to the Florida Highway Patrol and was booked into the St. Johns County Jail. He posted bond and was released on $5,000 bail Tuesday night.
Steve Cole, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said authorities were aware of Gallagher's arrest, but that his job status had not changed.
Hastings was on the national championship swim team at The Bolles School in Jacksonville and later graduated from Flagler College in St. Augustine.
