Man Fatally Shot; Step-Sister Charged With Manslaughter

POSTED: Thursday, November 23, 2006

A 36-year-old Jacksonville man was shot to death in an apparent accidental shooting early Thursday morning at a Flagler Estates home.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 9600 block of Oliver Avenue just after 2 a.m., finding James E. Rose with a gunshot wound to the head.

Rose was taken by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died at 5:30 a.m. An autopsy will be performed by District Medical Examiner Dr. Terrence Steiner to determine the cause of death.

Family members and witnesses told detectives that Rose and others were talking about guns when the victim pulled a handgun from his pocket. He gave the handgun to his step-sister and told her that the gun would not discharge. The woman pulled the trigger and the gun fired, striking Rose in the head.

Following interviews with witnesses and consultation with the State Attorney's Office, detectives charged the woman, identified as Melissa Zink, 30, of Lakeland, was booked into the St. Johns County Jail.

A judge set Zink's bond at $75,000. As of Friday afternoon, she had not bonded out of jail.
