Deputies: Woman Shot Step-Brother To 'Prove Herself'

POSTED: Friday, November 24, 2006

One day after a 36-year-old Jacksonville man was shot to death in a Flagler Estates home, St. Johns County detectives said his step-sister pulled the trigger in order to "prove herself."

Melissa Zink, 30, was arrested Thursday after James Rose died at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center. He was shot in a home on Oliver Avenue just after 2 a.m.Thursday morning.

According to police reports, Zink heard her step-brother on the phone talking about a $30,000 robbery deal. Deputies were told that he told Zink that if she wanted to be part of it, she had to prove herself, because she would never shoot anyone.

Zink said her stepbrother handed her the gun, she pulled the trigger and when it went off, striking Rose in the head. He was flown by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, but died.

Following interviews with witnesses and consultation with the State Attorney's Office, detectives arrested Zink on a charge of manslaughter.

A judge set Zink's bond at $75,000. As of Friday afternoon, she had not bonded out of jail.
