CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- The Clay County Sheriff's Office Juvenile Crime Unit continued its investigation on Monday afternoon into an intentionally set fire at Fleming Island High School.
According to detectives, the incident is considered a case of arson.
Fire/Rescue staff, sheriff’s office personnel and State Fire Marshal Office personnel responded shortly after 9 a.m. to the high school.
Authorities said they believe one or more arsonists lit paper towels on fire in a dispenser in a boy’s bathroom on the school’s second floor. The smoke set off the school’s sprinkler system that, due to a clogged floor drain in the bathroom, flooded portions of the second floor and sections of ceiling on the first floor beneath that area, police said.
The school’s fire alarm sounded and, per the evacuation plan, teachers and administrators led students out of the buildings.
No one was injured during the incident.
Authorities estimate that thousands of dollars in damage has been done to the facility and to school equipment.
No suspects have been identified or arrested at this point.
A reward of $250 is being offered by the school for information that leads to the identification of a suspect and an arrest.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Clay County Sheriff's Office at 904-264-6512.
