JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A chain-reaction wreck involving two tractor-trailers and five other vehicles caused big backups on a long stretch of Interstate 95 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Florida Highway Patrol received a call of a crash between J. Turner Butler Boulevard and Bowden Road at 1:12 p.m.
The wreck left traffic at a near standstill for about four hours in the northbound lanes between the Butler Boulevard and Bowden Road exits.
Channel 4's Jim Piggott reported that the chain-reaction crash began when the truck pulling a trailer lost control, causing two big rigs to jackknife, one onto the median.
"There was a pickup truck pulling a trailer, traveling northbound on I-95 just north of Butler in the center lane. For some reason, the vehicle lost control and traveled into the right-hand lane in front of a semi. The vehicles collided, and a chain reaction started behind those vehicles," said Lt. Bill Leeper.
Troopers said only one person was injured. However, the aftermath of the seven-vehicle pileup lasted for hours.
Rainy weather and slick roads also added to the traffic woes along the interstate.
Police detoured all northbound traffic at JTB for the first 45 minutes, then allowed one lane to reopen.
Southbound lanes were closed intermittently to allow wreckers to work on the trailer straddling the median.
"We had all three northbound lanes blocked at one time. Now, we have one open, waiting to clear the wreckage," Leeper said.
William Somerland, one of tractor-trailer drivers involved in the crash, talked to Channel 4 reporter Emily Pantelides about what he saw happen.
"We were going at least 75 mph or so, and it was raining hard. I backed off of them because they cut right in front of my nose. The next thing I knew, about a half-minute later, I see a car swerving around and I had nowhere to go, and the tractor-trailer in front of me slammed on his brakes and locked it up and went in a ditch," Somerland said. "I had nowhere to go. I hit him and then went across the median."
All lanes of I-95 were opened by 5 p.m., but traffic was backed up for miles in both directions and traffic was moving slowly.
