Police Search For Driver In Fatal Hit-And-Run

POSTED: Wednesday, January 17, 2007

A family is pleading for answers after a hit-and-run crash in St. Johns County claimed the life of their loved one.

The fatal hit-and-run happened on Thursday night outside of the Moultrie Square Publix on U.S. 1 in St. Augustine.

Dustin Padley, 22, died after being run over by a car.

Family members said Padley on his way to cash a check his mother had sent him. They said a car hit Padley when he was standing about two steps away from the curb.

"It was dark. I know that he was walking and had black or dark clothes on and a hood over his head," said Padley's mother, Teresa Deloach. "They took my child. He had just turned 22. He had just started to live."

Even more disturbing to the victim's family is that the car didn't stop. Family members traveled from Georgia to St. Augustine, asking for someone to come forward.

"If you have any kind of courage in you at all, if you're any kind of man or woman or whoever you are, the best thing you can do is step forward and do the right thing," said the victim's father Chester Padley. "That's all I can say -- do the right thing."

Police said they believe the vehicle that hit Padley is an older model sedan, possibly a Lincoln, with a vinyl top. They said the vehicle would have front-end damage, as well as windshield damage because they believe parts of the vehicle were left at the scene.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 904-301-3700 extension 108.

Padley's family said it is offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
