Orange Park Man Charged After Woman Dies

POSTED: Saturday, January 20, 2007

A 68-year-old Orange Park man well-known to local police is accused of murder after a woman shot five times in his home Friday afternoon dies.

Janie Johnson, 25, died at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center the morning after she was shot inside the Grove Park Lane home of Michael A. Wierer.

The first officers arriving at the home around 4:30 p.m. Friday said Wierer was still holding the gun. He was taken in for questioning and charged with murder.

Investigators said Johnson lived in Jacksonville and they were still trying to understand why she was there and what led to the shooting.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said they had responded to Wierer's home more than 100 times on various calls. Because they knew Wierer had a gun, officer had instructions to always send two officers when responding to his address.

A neighbor told Channel 4 that Wierer lived in the home alone since his wife died a couple of years ago.
