PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman was killed and two other people were critically injured in a single-car crash in Putnam County on Monday, when a car struck a tree in the San Mateo area and nearly broke in half.
The two 19-year-olds, Nicole Jones and a man who has not been identified, were flown to Shands-Jacksonville and Shands-Gainesville medical centers with critical injuries.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol said they received several calls around 11:30 a.m., about a high-speed chase.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two people arrived home at about 11 a.m. and spotted three people jumping into a car, leaving after what appeared to be a burglary.
The two people, driving a van, pursued the car down East End Road.
At some point, the two vehicles stopped and there was a verbal confrontation before the car took off again. The driver of the car eventually lost control, slid sideways off the road and slammed into a tree.
The two people who were chasing the car were not injured.
"They actually went beyond the crash scene, came back, and then left again. They were subsequently stopped within a few minutes by a sheriff's deputy and we have detained them at this time because we're in the process of getting some statements to piece this together and determine exactly what happened," said FHP Capt. Brett Coates.
Neither of the two people who were chasing the car was charged with a crime on Monday.
