Sheriff, Attorney Fight Early Release Of Cop Killer

Commission OKs Parole In 101 Years

POSTED: Wednesday, February 7, 2007

Florida's Parole Commission on Wednesday set a 2108 release date for a woman convicted of killing a Jacksonville police officer in 1983.

Andrea Hicks-Jackson, 48, was convicted of first-degree murder for the shooting death of Officer Gary Bevel and was sentenced to life in prison.

At her first parole hearing, Sheriff John Rutherford, Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda and other law enforcement officials from across the state spoke against her release.

Hicks-Jackson was not present at the hearing, and no one spoke on her behalf, according to Channel 4's Dan Leveton, who attended the hearing.

Police said Bevel, 29, bent to look for keys Hicks said she had dropped when she shot him six times.

"She shot him four times in the head, once in the shoulder, and once in the neck area. She did not miss. All six of her shots hit their target," de la Rionda said.

Hicks-Jackson was initially sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to life in prison in 2000 after the death sentence was overturned four times by appeals courts.

In his letter to the parole commission, de la Rionda said Hicks-Jackson should not be released until the year 2400.

"She brutally executed a fine gentleman who happened to be a police officer. She killed him because he was a police officer," de la Rionda said.

The commission on Wednesday recommended Hicks be released in 101 years and set the next parole hearing for 2012.
