JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A woman was shaken up but not injured after her vehicle was fired upon as she traveled along Interstate 295 on the Westside Wednesday morning.
The shooting took place in the southbound lanes of the highway between the Pritchard Road and Commonwealth Avenue exits, according to officials.
Rebecca Morrison said she was on her way to the doctor when she heard a loud pop. Then noticed a nickel-sized nick in her windshield where police later said a bullet hit.
"I thought it was a rock or a truck backfire, and then once I seen it, that's when I got nervous," Morrison said.
Although she said she was rattled by the sudden shock, Morrison kept control of her car in rush-hour traffic.
"I kept driving and focused even though it was scary," Morrison said.
She later pulled over and called police.
An officer looked at the damage and determined that it was more than likely caused by a small-caliber gun.
"A .25-caliber gun. He said a .25-caliber," Morrison said. "I was scared and I thanked God that I was still alive."
She feels very fortunate, especially when she said she looks back on what happened along I-295 more than 14 years ago.
She said she remembers when the stretch of I-295 was called the Highway to Hell after multiple incidents of cars being shot and rocks and bricks being thrown through windshields. The incidents left one man dead and a woman severely injured.
The attacks remain unsolved.
"I know that I've been blessed. I could have been hurt or dead with a lot of other people on the road along with me," Morrison said.
If you know anything about the shooting on I-95, you're urged to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
