JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville Sheriff's deputy recently awoke to find that his police car had become target practice for a gunman.
Pieces of broken glass were scattered all over an Arlington driveway as evidence of a weekend shooting that left the neighborhood on alert.
"I think the person that did it intended to do it," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson.
The police cruiser was hit with a half dozen bullets. The windshield was hit and two side windows of the car were completely shattered.
The officer's personal car, his home and his neighbor's home were also hit during the hail of gunfire.
Police said they believe the shooter targeted the area, knowing a Jacksonville sheriff's officer lived there.
"You have a marked police car sitting outside of a residence. So, they knew No. 1 that there was a police car there, No. 2 an officer more than likely lived there, and they intentionally shot it up," Jefferson said.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said some officers are allowed to take their patrol cars home because it helps keep crime away by letting people know an officer lives in the area.
In this case, however, police said the opposite was true.
"Sometimes, they want to take out personal matters or get revenge for an arrest. We don't know what the circumstances are in this case. We're just glad no one was hurt," Jefferson said.
Police told Channel 4 that the officer whose car was shot at is a school resource officer, and that they have passed on information about the shooting to the school board.
The investigation of the shooting is ongoing.
