Police: Housekeeper Held Captive In Hotel Room

POSTED: Wednesday, February 21, 2007
UPDATED: 12:56 am EST February 22, 2007

A guest at a Jacksonville Beach Hotel was recently arrested after police said he held one of the hotel's housekeepers captive in his room.

The incident took place at the Quality Suites Hotel in Jacksonville Beach, where police said Robin Beard called the housekeeper up to his room, cornered her and solicited sexual favors.

Employees told Channel 4 that Beard appeared to be in there on business when he checked into the hotel, but authorities said what he did at the hotel landed him in jail.

Police said the confrontation happened inside of room 302. They arrested Beard after they said he locked a hotel housekeeper in his room and, according to the police report, tried to solicit her for sex.

Hotel management said two housekeepers went to Beard's room after he called the front desk requesting more towels and said he wanted his bathroom cleaned.

Two housekeepers went to his room. However, when one of them went into the hallway to get trash bags, Beard locked the door with the other woman still inside, investigators said.

According to the report, Beard pulled out about $400 and the housekeeper felt it was in exchange for sexual favors. They said when she attempted to exit the bathroom, Beard held the door handle and told her to shut up.

Police said the housekeeper was able to push Beard out of her way and run for help.

Hotel management said such an incident has never happened in the past, but that it is taking precautions to prevent future occurrences.

"We're now taking the proper measures and now going above and beyond to not only secure our employees' safety but also our guests' safety," hotel manager Sara Uselman said.

She said the hotel housekeepers work in pairs for safety reasons, and that they do not usually clean the room while guests are present but that in this case Beard requested that the housekeepers come.
