Stranger Rescues Woman From Car In Pond

POSTED: Tuesday, March 13, 2007
UPDATED: 8:38 pm EDT March 13, 2007

A woman was pulled from a pond that she drove her car into on Tuesday morning thanks to a good Samaritan, police said.

The incident happened on Plantation Island Drive in St. Johns County.

Deputies said Alex Glen saw Kristina Demato drive her car into a retention pond and then dove into the water and rescued the woman. They said Glen then left the scene.

When police and rescue personnel arrived to the pond behind Hannah's Walk, they said they found Demato's car almost completely submerged.

They said thanks to Glen, Demato escaped with only minor injuries.

"A driver who was passing by stopped and assisted her and got her out of the car," said St. Augustine Police Department Sgt. Pat McCaulley.

Police said Demato was shaken up but otherwise OK.

How the woman ended up driving into the pond is still under investigation. Police said the woman told them she didn’t know what happened.

"According to a witness, the car was submerged when he got her out under the water and then the car floated out farther in pond," McCaulley said.

Demato was transported to Flagler Hospital for a precautionary checkup. Channel 4's Dan Leveton reported that she was released a short time later.
