JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police pursued what they described as a stolen truck through the streets of Northwest Jacksonville Wednesday morning.
The truck failed to stop even after police attempted to use stop-sticks and continued until it hit a utility poll near the intersection of Moncrief Road and Raines Avenue.
The pursuit began on Edgewood Avenue, where officers said they saw three people acting suspicious.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, when the officers called for backup, the driver of the truck sped off, reaching speeds of up to 70 mph.
"He (an officer) spotted a suspicious vehicle that tried to leave the neighborhood suddenly. The vehicle was attempting to elude him. At some point they called for backup with him on Edgewood Avenue. The guy began to flee. Pursuit was initiated and went through several areas on this side of town, lasting about 20 minutes and resulted in the suspect vehicle crashing into a telephone poll," said JSO Lt. Mike Davidson.
Police said the truck crashed because of high speeds and also because the two front tires had been blown out not by the stop-sticks but because of the way the driver was handling the vehicle.
Police deployed a Taser gun on the driver of the truck after he attempted to flee. That suspect was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The three suspects taken into custody are all charged with running from police, according to officers.
Detectives continue to investigate why there was suspicious activity and behavior. An officer told Channel 4 the truck involved in the incident might have been stolen.
