JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Wrecks that blocked lanes of Interstate 10 near Interstate 295 and Interstate 95 north of the airport for hours on Wednesday morning were cleared by midday, but the Florida Highway Patrol continues to search for a tractor-trailer that ran over and killed a motorcyclist.
Just after 10:30 a.m., a motorcyclist pulled into the path of the back half of a tandem tractor-trailer that was southbound on I-95 just north of Airport Road, according to troopers. The rider was ejected from the motorcycle and run over by the big rig's rear tires.
The motorcyclist, 32-year-old Thomas Melvin Poff, of Woodbine, Ga., died at the scene.
Troopers said the semi, described as a white tractor with a silver or white trailer, continued southbound. They were not sure if the driver was aware he ran over the motorcyclist.
The FHP said the driver would likely be charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a fatality, which is a felony.
Troopers said they were still investigating why the motorcyclists changed lanes, but it may have been due to an unmarked FHP car attempting to stop a speeding car in the same area. Troopers doing traffic enforcement in the area witnessed the crash.
I-95 southbound between Pecan Park Road and Duval Road was until about 12:20 p.m. while the crash was investigated and cleared. At one point traffic backed up into Nassau County almost to the Georgia border. Northbound traffic was also slow in the area.
Earlier in the day all eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 were closed after several vehicles and a log truck were involved in a crash. The log truck overturned about 8:20 a.m., spilling its load across the highway.
One lane reopened briefly, but then was closed again while the logs were picked up. The highway was clear and traffic returned to normal again about 11:20 a.m.
While that incident was being cleared, a second crash occurred in the westbound lanes. A tanker truck hit a barrier wall and spilled chemicals. One westbound lane was closed for just over one hour.
