Woman Must Prove She's Alive To Get Medicare
POSTED: Tuesday, April 24, 2007
SANFORD, Fla. -- It's not unreasonable for people to lose their medical insurance when they die. The only problem is that Mabel Toevs isn't dead.
The Seminole County woman received a letter from her prescription drug company earlier this month, offering its condolences. The letter said the company had been informed of her death by Medicare.
"I didn't reach for the smelling salts. I just got angry," Mabel told WFTV-TV in Orlando.
Toevs says she doesn't know what happened, but for now, her Medicare account is canceled.
To have her benefits restored, the 95-year-old woman will have to prove she's still alive.
Toevs will have go in person to a Social Security office and present identification.
