Father Backs Over Son With SUV, Killing Him

POSTED: Friday, May 18, 2007

A 10-year-old boy died at the hospital after his father backed over him with his sport utility vehicle Thursday night, police said.

Jair Harris was killed at about 7 p.m. while riding his bicycle near his house in the 7300 block of Northwest 47th Place.

Lauderhill police said Harris' father, Wayne Cunningham, forgot to tell him something and backed up when he drove over him.

"The kid was in the middle of the street laying under the truck," witness Maureen Morrison said. "Blood was coming from his nose, his eyes, his mouth."

Harris was airlifted to Broward General Medical Center, where he later died.

Police said this sort of occurrence is happening way too often.

"It really is a terrible situation," Lauderhill police Lt. Mike Cochran said. "What we're trying to do is educate the public and let them know that they need to make sure that nothing's behind your vehicle when you're backing up. It's just an easy thing to do -- stop, look over your shoulder, make sure nothing's there."

Cunningham, 36, was not charged.
