Service Held Where Woman's Body Was Found

Police Still Don't Know Identity Of Victim

POSTED: Tuesday, May 22, 2007

More than 100 people held candles, prayed and sang songs Monday night at a service in an apartment parking lot were a young woman's body was found in a Dumpster last week.

Police said it appears the victim was in her early 20s. They believe she was struck in the head and killed somewhere else and brought the body there.

The victim had no identification and no one in the The Pines complex knows her. An autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was unable to determine her identity.

"This is a case were someone in our community is brutally murdered and then treated like refuse," said the Rev. Frank Logue, who organized the event. "I though that very act just cries out for someone to stand out against it and I felt confident that our community wanted a way to do that."

People who live in the complex are worried that the crime is unsolved. and said seeing that they have the support of others helps them cope.

"It really touched me to see people come together like this," a resident of the apartment said after the service.

St. Marys homicide victim rendering
St. Marys police released an artist rendering of the victim, hoping someone recognizes her.
The victim was described as medium-tone black woman with brown eyes and short black hair, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 143 pounds. She had no tattoos and was wearing a green, polka-dot pullover top.

On Tuesday, police released an artist rendering, hoping someone recognizes her and can provide her identity to investigators.

St. Marys police ask anyone who has any information about the crime to call 912-729-1442 or submit the information on the Crimestoppers page of their Web site.

"(We're) waiting for the autopsy report to come in so we'll have more information from that report," said St. Marys Police Chief Tim Hatch. "Right now we're pretty well just at a standstill."
