Body In Dumpster Was Teen From Jacksonville

GBI Identifies Victim Using Fingerprint Database

POSTED: Thursday, May 24, 2007
UPDATED: 10:14 am EDT May 25, 2007

Using fingerprints from the body found in the Dumpster of a St. Marys apartment complex last week, police identified the victim as 15-year-old Shanbrier White from Jacksonville.

Officials said White was not reported missing until Sunday -- five days after a maintenance man found the body under some trash bags in the Dumpster at The Pines Apartments.

"That's sad," a resident of the apartments said Thursday after learning that the victim was a teenager. "That's somebody's baby."

Shortly after the investigation began, police said they believe she was killed somewhere else and the body was dumped there. An autopsy showed White was beaten and died from several blows to the head.

"It could have been a friend she was with, she could have gotten into a car with the wrong person, she could have been abducted," St. Marys police Lt. Frank Thornal said. "There's just a number of things it could have been -- we just don't know."

On Monday night, more than 100 people held candles, prayed and sang songs at a service in the apartments' parking lot. On Tuesday, police released an artist rendering, hoping someone would recognize her.

On Thursday morning, police said that identification was made by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation using the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System.

Police said the White's fingerprints were in the database because she had a criminal record, but juvenile arrest records are not public.

Officers said they have leads in their investigation but not close to making an arrest.

"We're still not far enough into it to call them suspects, but we do have some people of interest that we're looking at and talking to," Thornal said.

St. Marys police ask anyone who has any information about the slaying to call 912-729-1442 or submit the information on the Crimestoppers page of their Web site.
