Bush pledged federal help in response to wildfires that have ravaged parts of Georgia and Florida. The wildfires have been burning for almost six weeks and are some of the largest ever to hit the South. Drought conditions have dried up swamps and wetlands that typically serve as fire barriers. President George W. Bush took some time out of his Georgia visit to thank some of the firefighters who have kept busy battling the wildfires that have plagued southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.During Tuesday's stop, the president received a briefing on the massive wildfires that have burned for weeks."It's a very difficult period for the people in southeast Georgia and north Florida. A lot of lives are being affected. I've come down to let the people know that we are concerned about their livelihood and we're fully aware of the nature of these fires," Bush said. "We strongly support the efforts being done here to fight these fires and we wish the people all the best."
Bush praised state and local efforts, and said the next question is, "How can we help them even more?""We have a lot of brave men and women on the front lines (fighting fires)," Bush said.Shortly after the president's departure, Channel 4 learned that some firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting the large fire in Ware County south of Waycross.Officials said five or six firefighters were working an unburned section of woodland inside the fire lines off Swamp Road when they became trapped Tuesday afternoon.All of the firefighters involved were rescued and checked for burns and smoke inhalation.
