Adult Store Moves In; Dance Studio Moves Out

Dance Director: Novelty Store Too Close For Comfort

A ballet teacher in Argyle Forest is moving her business because she said an adult novelty shop opening nearby is too close for comfort.

The school and the novelty shop are located in the 6600 block of Argyle Forest Boulevard.

Step-By-Step Dance Studio director Regina Spivey said the novelty shop moving in two doors down is too close and she's leaving after 15 years in the same location.

"I have to protect the kids that come in and out of this school. The parents depend on me," said Spivey.

Sunset Novelties is expected to open its doors for business this weekend.

"It's sad because they've been so used to this same room for so long. It's sad that they have to leave here," said parent Sheri Hulbert.

Hulbert has three children enrolled in the dance studio. She said she was glad the studio was moving away from the novelty shop.

Spivey said she could not have stayed because she was worried that the adult novelty shop would draw in people who should not be around kids.

She also said she is worried about moving her business.

"Just because I move doesn't mean that I'm going to keep my same clients," Spivey said.

The owner of Sunset Novelty told Channel 4 on the phone that the shop draws in normal people, not pedophiles, and he said the business would be discrete on the outside.

"Our windows are completely opaque and our sign is very non-suggestive," Howie said.

The Step-By-Step Dance Studio is moving to North Florida Gymnastics off state Road 17 in Orange Park.
