Officer's Guns, Badge Taken In Burglary

POSTED: Tuesday, July 3, 2007

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating the culprits behind the burglary of a Jacksonville officer's residence.

According to the NCSO, on Monday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., the Callahan home of a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police officer was burglarized.

During the burglary, the thieves stole the victim's JSO patrol duty belt, a JSO portable radio, an X26 Tazer, a glock 9 mm semiautomatic handgun with a JSO badge etched on the side of the barrel, as well as the officer's badge.

Authorities would not disclose how the thieves got into the home or if any other items were stolen.

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office said it is searching for two white, male juveniles who may be driving a small, white vehicle with a doughnut-type spare tire on the rear passenger side of the vehicle.

"We are going to try to assist in Nassau County whatever way we can to help get these suspects off the streets," said JSO spokesman Ken Jefferson.

The sheriff's office said anyone who has any doubt about the authenticity of an officer who approaches should ask to see the officer's credentials. Besides a badge, every officer also carries identification that proves he or she is indeed an officer.

Anyone with information about the burglary or persons of interest is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 904-225-0331 or call Crimestoppers at 866-845- TIPS.
