'Most Wanted' In ID Theft Scam Caught In Florida

Feds: Scam Stole At Least 2,000 Credit Reports

POSTED: Wednesday, August 8, 2007

A man accused of being a member of a notorious group of Nigerian identity scammers was arrested during a routine traffic stop in Florida, according to the Secret Service.

Rilwan Soetan, 49, who is on the U.S. Secret Service's "Most Wanted List," was taken into custody in Hamilton County on Tuesday.

Federal agents believe Soetan is part of a $1.7 million identity theft scam.

State Department of Agriculture agents acting on a tip stopped Soetan's car on Interstate 75 and found documents with people's personal identifying information, multiple cell phones and $6,000 in cash.

The Secret Service said Soetan is part of an organized group of identity scammers who have compromised more than 2,000 credit reports.

Bronson said the arrest is an example of how the Department of Agriculture's law enforcement division has branched out in recent years.
