Teen Killed In Nassau County Wreck
Driver, 1-Year-Old Child Survive
NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- A Yulee teenager who tried to stop the Jeep Cherokee she was riding in from drifting into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 17 was killed when the SUV left the road and overturned.
The vehicle, driven by Brittany Helton, 20, of Yulee, was traveling north on U.S. 17 near Lankford Avenue about 3 p.m. when it veered across the center line. The Florida Highway Patrol said the passenger, Lazara Landin, 18, also of Yulee, grabbed the steering wheel and pulled.
The SUV swerved off the road, collided with a utility pole and then overturned. Landin was thrown from the vehicle and died on the scene.
Helton suffered minor injuries and a 1-year-old in the back seat was not hurt.
The FHP said Helton and Landin were not wearing seat belts.
