Stephen 'Ryan' Reed

St. Johns Firefighter Dies In Motorcycle Wreck

POSTED: 10:41 am EDT August 27, 2007

A St. Johns County firefighter was killed early Saturday morning in a motorcycle crash on Jacksonville's Southside.

Stephen Reed, 24, known to friends as Ryan, died in a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Pottsburg Drive and Ryar Road while he was off duty. According to the accident report, Reed's Suzuki did not stop at the intersection, failed to make the right turn, ran off the road and struck a tree.

There were no witnesses to the wreck and traffic homicide detective said they are not sure what time it actually occured. A motorist saw Reed off the side of the road just before 6 a.m. and called 911.

Reed was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Reed was wearing a helmet.

Reed, a certified firefighter and emergency medical technician, had been with the fire department for 14 months. He was assigned to stations 9 and 12 in the county's north-central district.

"We are all deeply saddened by his untimely death," said a statement issued by the St. Johns County Fire Department, “Our sympathy is extended to his family during this extremely difficult time."

A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Craig Funeral Home in St. Augustine. A funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ryan's name may be made to Firefighters for Families, a charity representing St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
