Poll: Support Slips For Property Tax Proposal
POSTED: Wednesday, September 12, 2007
A new poll suggests that support for a state constitutional amendment to reduce property taxes has dropped.
A proposed constitutional amendment on the Jan. 29 ballot would give homeowners the option of taking a larger exemption on their property taxes (75 percent off the first $200,000 of a home's value and 15 percent off the next $300,000) or keeping their benefits under the current Save Our Homes Amendment, which limits annual increases of a home's taxable value to 3 percent annually.
A 60 percent majority is required for passage.
The Quinnipiac University poll survey found that 47 percent of Florida voters now support the Super Homestead Exemption plan.
In July, Florida voters favored the proposed amendment by a 57 percent to 17 percent and nearly two-thirds of the respondents in the recent survey said the measure needs "a lot more explanation" while just 5 percent believe it has been "clearly explained."
Also, 55 percent said they would favor expanding legalized gambling to raise money to help the state out of its budget crisis, while almost a fourth said it would be OK to dip into the state's rainy day fund to meet the shortfall.
