JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer first thought it might be firecrackers, but it was eight gunshots fired during her live report on Thursday afternoon.
Gunfire is something people who live in the West Chase Apartments off 103rd Street say is all too common in the area.
"I think it’s scary anytime you hear gunfire, but imagine living around it everyday," the woman told Channel 4's Jim Piggott.
Residents showed bullet holes in the doors of one apartment. A maintenance man said they fix the holes all the time.
Yet when Piggott tried to talk to people who live in the complex, most residents ignored him. The few who did agree to talk did not want to be identified, but said they are doing what they can to get rid of the violence, but it is too prevalent.
"Does it do any good to call police? No. But they have so many places they run," said a man who did not want his name used.
Earlier in the week management posted "No Loitering" signs reading, but they said they don't know how long they will last.
Police said West Chase gets a lot of its attention, but other complexes in the area have even more crime. They said they try to be proactive with people in the area, but residents said that will not make much difference as most of the violence comes from people who don't live there.
"I know for a fact there are lots of drug dealers that live out here and come out and sit and sell their wares," a resident said.
