Police: 2 Fatal Shootings 4 Blocks Apart

POSTED: Monday, October 1, 2007

Jacksonville detectives rushed to the scenes of two fatal shootings before having to send a third team of investigators to look into more gunshots fired on the Westside Monday evening.

The first shooting took place at about 9 p.m. at the Eureka Garden Apartments on Labelle Street off Cassat Avenue, which has been the seen of other gun violence this year.

A man believed to be in his early 20s has died as the result of that shooting.

"Upon (patrol officer's) arrival, they found a young black male deceased … At that point they roped off the crime scene and called for detectives and evidence technicians and began trying to speak with neighbors in the complex," said Lt. Scott Allen at Eureka Garden.

A second shooting took place a short time later in the 1100 block of Comanche Street, which is only about four blocks away from Eureka Garden.

A second man found in the middle of the street after being shot multiple times was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.

"We responded here to a call of person being shot. Upon arrival, our officers observed a young black male lying on the ground. He'd been shot. We're still researching to determine the identity of the suspects and to determine if this shooting is related to the shooting at 1214 Labelle St., Eureka Garden Apartments," said Sgt. Danny Adams. "We are talking to citizens and witnesses and gathering our information. This investigation is ongoing."

While at the scene of the first shooting, Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer reported hearing about a dozen gunshots in the area. A third team of detectives was sent to investigate those gunshots.

"There is a confirmed incident here at Eureka Garden. There is a second confirmed incident, where another team of detectives is responding as we speak. Then shortly before the taping of this clip right here there were shots heard in the area and patrol officers are just responding to that," Allen said.

Anyone with information about any of the Monday night shootings is asked to contact authorities at 904-630-0500.
