JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Anti-abortion supporters in Jacksonville have vowed to stay outside a local medical center day and night as part of a campaign called 40 Days For Life. For 40 days, protestors in the River City and in dozens of other cities across the country will hold prayer vigils similar the one on the Southside to raise awareness about abortion.Groups of people from various churches have been participating in 40 Days For Life by keeping constant vigil on University Boulevard where they pray, hold Rosary beads and carry signs with the clear message that they think abortion is wrong.
Monday night was day 13 of the 40-day event."Innocent lives are being taken every year in this country without a trial, no jury or anything," said anti-abortion protestor Rosemarie.Twenty-four hours a day passersby will see a group gathered in front of a medical center."The whole goal is to stop abortion and provide alternatives -- adoptions and raising children and families raising their children and giving them help to raise their children and closing down abortion clinics," said anti-abortion protestor Rich Holtz. The group said what it's doing is peaceful, legal and meant to educate. However, the protestors' presence has not been sitting well with some people who said they disagree with the protestors' method and message."Every woman has a right to make their own decision and choices about what they want to do with their bodies," said Tae Ascemon."I do not like pushy people. I do not like people getting in my face, telling me, 'This is what I think and you should feel the same way.' No, I shouldn't," said another passerby who disagreed with the protestors. The event is taking place at 88 different cities for the same 40-day period, which ends Nov. 4.
