Police: 6-Year-Old Critically Injured By Babysitter

POSTED: Sunday, October 14, 2007

WARNING: Some may find details in this story too graphic.

A 6-year-old remains in critical condition and the 15-year-old who was baby-sitting him is facing charges of aggravated child abuse.

Police said they were called to a home on Tom Morris Drive, where the victim's mother told them she arrived at home to find her child bleeding and unresponsive on the kitchen floor.

The child was rushed to an area hospital, where police said it was discovered the child had suffered from head trauma, skull fracturing and possible brain injuries.

The mother of the victim told officers a 15-year-old boy was at home alone with the 6-year-old victim and his 3-year-old sister, according to police.

Police said the teen admitted to being at home alone with the victim and the 3-year-old when the 6-year-old was injured.

During the interview, the 15-year-old made several conflicting statements as to how the victim was injured, according to police.

Police said that during their interview the 15-year-old admitted to punching the victim on both sides of his face, to kicking the victim on his legs twice, to striking the victim on his stomach with his knee, to hitting the victim in the back of the head with a wooden cutting board and a plastic cutting board and to stepping on the victim's head three or four times while the victim was lying on the kitchen floor at the base of the refrigerator.

The suspect was upset about how the 6-year-old was behaving and was trying to correct the behavior of the boy, police said.

The child remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate the incident.
