YULEE, Fla. -- A 15-year-old girl who got out to help a dog struck by her mother's car Thursday evening was hit and killed by another car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Schaunell Bryant was standing on Blackrock Road just after 7 p.m. when she was struck by a car driven by 23-year-old Christopher Peeples.
Peeples told troopers he swerved to avoid the mother's car and others standing in the road and did not see Bryant. An air ambulance was called, but doctors said she was dead by the time the helicopter arrived.
The FHP said driver of the car suffered minor injuries. Troopers said an investigation into the incident was continuing and charges are pending.
Bryant's grieving parents said their only daughter, a home-schooled sophomore, loved animals and dreamed of having a career helping them.
"She loved God with all of her heart and she loved people and animals," her mother, Carrie Bryant, told Channel 4's Vickie Pierre.
Neither FHP nor the family knew the condition of the dog Bryant died trying to rescue.
"She has a big heart and she just opened up to everybody that would let her," said Brad Bryant, the victim's father.
In addition to her parents, Schaunell Bryant is survived by two younger brothers and a house full of pets.
