Councilwoman Takes On Boselli In Fight For Community Center

POSTED: Wednesday, November 7, 2007
UPDATED: 7:40 pm EST November 7, 2007

The renovation work on what was once an abandoned building in Northwest Jacksonville has been completed, and without a dime from the city a new recreation center is up and running.

Once a dilapidated building, the recreation center on Moncrief Road near Golfair Boulevard has been completely renovated.

The facility doors are opened thanks to Tony Boselli's group and other community groups that spent thousand of dollars fixing up the abandon building and turning it into a new center where kids come for after school programs.

Although the center is open, the question of who will run it remains up in the air.

Denise Lee, the city councilwoman for the district where the center is located, said the center is for the community and should be run by the community.

The city still owns the building and Boselli is trying to lease it, but Lee said she doesn't think that should happen.

"For some reason Councilwoman Denise Lee does not like the fact that we are trying to help young people in that community," Boselli said.

Lee told Channel 4 by phone she does not think any group should have control over a community center, stating: "Mr. Boselli might be a popular person but he has nothing to do with this community. He does not live here."

"This is home. I understand I don't live in that exact vicinity but I believe whatever happens in every part of this town affects us all," Boselli said.

Lee said it's about more than that. She said she thinks the government can do a better job. But city officials said they don't have the money to run the center and that they want Boselli's group to do it.

However, Lee said Boselli has a negative impression of the neighborhood surrounding the center and she resents that, saying: "Not everybody in this neighborhood gets into trouble."

"I don't know if I want to say she is trying to kick us out, but she is making it so difficult that it's almost impossible to be in it while we all along have been working in good faith," Boselli said.

The city continues to work on the issue. City Council is expected to vote on the issue on Tuesday.
