ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The family of a St. Augustine 6-year-old girl said it's hoping to raise enough money to take her halfway around the world for a potentially sight-saving trip.
Rylee Lovett has a rare condition that doctors said will leave her blind with no hope for recovery.
She is legally blind and has Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, a condition where the optic nerve that connects the eyes to the brain is not fully developed.
"She couldn't tell the difference between you and I by looking at us," said Rylee's mother, Shayla Lovett.
Rylee can see light and dark but cannot see faces.
Her parents want her to see faces and said their only hope is in China, where doctors are injecting stem cells of umbilical cords of newborns as a treatment for ONH.
But many American ophthalmologists disagree with the procedure.
"There's potential risk not only to the pocketbook but also to the child, and there's no good scientific data to support any good results from this treatment," said Nemours ophthalmologist Dr. Robert Hered.
Despite Hered's opinion, Lovett said she is very optimistic.
She said the treatment has improved the sight of four other children from the U.S. with the same condition as Rylee.
Rylee's family said it needs to raise about $60,000 to get the 6-year-old to China and to be treated.
The family plans to auction off a Saturn and are also accepting donations to help save Rylee's sight. Anyone who wants to make a donation can do so at
