Monument Unveiled To Honor 'Bullet' Bob Hayes

Thursday Would Have Been Hayes' 65th Birthday

POSTED: Thursday, December 20, 2007

Five years after the death of Bob Hayes, a memorial to honor the Olympic gold medal sprinter and NFL great was unveiled in his home town.

The man with humble beginnings in Jacksonville came to be known as the fastest man alive. After winning gold in the 100-meter event in Tokyo, Hayes played for the Dallas Cowboys and won a Super Bowl ring.

"Olympic great, football great, but more importantly, a great person," his sister, Lucille Hester remembers.

Hayes died of kidney failure in 2002 at the age of 59.

He was originally buried in a Northwest Jacksonville cemetery, but he was moved to Edgewood Cemetery, where a monument was designed to include inscriptions of his many accomplishments.

The family chose to unveil the new mausoleum on Thursday, which would have been Hayes' 65th birthday.

"I miss him terribly. I long for him," Hester said. "He was just wonderful."

"I used to watch him on my black and white TV back in the day," said Robert Newhouse, who was a Cowboys teammate from 1972 to 1974. "Then I had the luxury of meeting Bob Hayes when I was drafted to the Dallas Cowboys in 1972 and Bob Hayes became a great friend of mine."

Lacey O’Neal, a fellow Olympian and friend, recalls their adventures together.

"Bob and I competed in Poland, Germany and England and then we both made the 1964 Olympics team," O'Neal told Channel 4's Ashley Townsend.

Even though the world knew him as "The Bullet," Jay Redford said he knew Hayes when his nickname was "Crow."

Hayes' legacy lives on the annual Bob Hayes track and field invitational featuring some the nation's best high school runners.
