Jesus Stolen From Nativity -- Again
POSTED: Friday, December 21, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For two years in a row, the baby Jesus was stolen from a nativity scene in front of a Mandarin Catholic church.
The statue of newborn Jesus was taken from the stable at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Old St. Augustine Road. This year, Jesus disappeared sometime Saturday night. One of the sheep statues was also taken.
Despite the thefts, the church has no plans to change or move the display.
"We like the fact that it shows that the reason for the season is Jesus, and we want everybody to see it," Father Dan Cody told Channel 4's Ashley Townsend.
Church members can't believe anyone would steal from a nativity scene.
"I think it's terrible," Priscilla Wenner said. "I think it's a double sin if you take something from a church."
Last year, the stolen Jesus statue was returned after the theft got some publicity. This year, after manger was empty for five days, a good Samaritan brought a new Jesus figurine by the church.
The donor did not leave a name, but did leave a message: "Thou shalt not steal."
