Driver Runs From Traffic Stop, Shocked With Taser Gun

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man pulled over for running a stop sign Sunday morning ended up in the hospital in serious condition after police used a Taser gun on him when he took off running.Police said Jermaine Merriweather, 23, abandoned his car after being stopped on Brewster Road. Officers chased him and fired a Taser gun at him when they said it appeared he was pulling something from his waistband when he was ordered to stop.After the man was in custody, rescue personnel checked him -- Jacksonville Sheriff's Office policy when a Taser gun is used -- and he was cleared to be placed in the back of the police car. A few minutes later, the man began to show symptoms of a seizure and was rushed to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.
Police said they found a bag of cocaine in his hand. According to the report, officers believe Merriweather had it in his mouth when he was patted down and had tried to swallow it.Merriweather is facing several drug and traffic charges, as well as resisting arrest.
