FHP identifies 19-year-old hit while crossing US 1

Troopers: Teen sustained life-threatening injuries

St. Johns County deputies investigate after a young man was struck crossing U.S. 1 on Monday night.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol said a 19-year-old St. Augustine man who was not wearing reflective gear and was not on a crosswalk was struck Monday night while crossing U.S. 1 at Shores Boulevard.

Troopers said Matthews Fisher Chrest was first struck about 9:40 p.m. by a Jeep Cherokee driven by 24-year-old Holly Vogel. He was then run over by a Toyota 4-Runner driven by 22-year-old Krymsen Gaynor.

Chrest was airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries.

The drivers were not injured.

According to the FHP, the vehicles had a green light, but the investigation continues.
