14-year-old accidentally shot by friend

Boy originally told police he was shot during drive-by

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy told police he was in front of his Durkeeville home just before 2 p.m. Monday when he was shot in the stomach by someone in a passing car.

Police said the boy later admitted that he and a friend were playing with the rifle home alone when it went off.

Police spent five hours investigating the shooting. Four hours into the investigation police carried out a long black firearm, to then learn that the boys made up the story and there was no drive-by shooting at all.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the victim said he was alone at his home near the intersection of Sixth Street and Myrtle Avenue when he was shot. A friend said he was nearby when he heard the commotion and called 911.

"The 14-year-old has at least one gunshot to the lower torso and he's in stable condition. It's a non life-threatening wound," said Lieutenant Jackson Short.

The teenager was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating just how the teenagers obtained the firearm, as they do not believe the gun belonged to family of the boys. The two boys will not be charged for the accidental shooting.
