2-3" Of Snow Expected In Metro Atlanta

System To Bring Greater Jax Wet, Cold Saturday

POSTED: Friday, January 18, 2008

Metro Atlanta and much of north Georgia were under a winter storm advisory on Saturday as a storm front moving across the Southeast could drop up to 3 inches of snow in the city and double that in the higher elevations.

Some areas could see "waves and waves of snow through lunchtime and even into the evening," said Glenn Burns, chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta. "The precipitation will likely begin as rain and then quickly change into snow as cold, arctic air plows into it."

The snow in north Georgia comes three days after the area experienced some flurries that forced several districts to close schools and caused the delays and cancellations of several flights.

Temperatures in north Georgia are expected to be in the teens Sunday morning. The high temperature Sunday will be in the upper 30s.

Saturday's winter storm advisory from the National Weather Service covered 35 counties. Travel problems are possible, especially in the mountains of north Georgia into North Carolina.

The same system will make for a rainy Saturday in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.

"It'll be a cold rain, on and off all day," Channel 4 senior meteorologist John Gaughan said Friday on The Ten O'Clock News.

While the front will pass and the skies will clear on Sunday, Jacksonville's high temperature will reach only 50 degrees, with a light freeze forecast for Monday morning.
