2 Children, Adult Killed In Weekend House Fires

POSTED: Monday, January 21, 2008

Two young children and an 89-year-old woman were killed in two southwest Georgia house fires during the weekend, the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner's office said on Sunday.

The two children were killed as a result of a fire Saturday afternoon that destroyed the frame house they lived in at Tyty in Tift County.

Glenn Allen, spokesman for the fire commissioner's office, identified the children as 3-year-old Anthony Dermario Mathis and his sister, 6-year-old Shadasia Johnson. He said Johnson died shortly after midnight Sunday at a burn center in Augusta.

The house was owned by the children's grandmother, Joanne Ford, who Allen said was outside the house when it caught fire. The fire is still under investigation, he said.

On Sunday, Cutie Mae Gardner, 89, was killed when fire destroyed her frame house in Bainbridge. Allen said she was the only one in the house and the fire may have been electrical in nature.
