Elderly Man Pulled From Burning Home Dies

2 Firefighters Hurt Battling Blaze

UPDATED: 10:35 pm EST January 25, 2008

A man carried out of his burning Westside home late Thursday afternoon has died at a hospital.

Neighbors told Channel 4 they saw smoke streaming from the home in the 400 block of King Street and called 911 before trying to go inside to rescue the wheelchair-bound man who lives there. They said the fire was too strong and they could not get inside.

A police officer who arrived at the scene also tried unsuccessfully to get into the burning house.

Firefighters finally found the elderly homeowner passed out in the front of the home.

The man -- later identified as 84-year-old Willie Williams -- was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with critical injuries and later transported to Shands-Gainesville to be treated for severe burns.

Two firefighters were also hurt as they worked to extinguish the blaze. Channel 4 was told the firefighters were hospitalized in stable condition.

Investigators said it's unclear what sparked the afternoon blaze but said they did not find any evidence of working smoke detectors in the home.
