MACCLENNY, Fla. -- Two men from Miami were killed Monday afternoon on Interstate 10 after the tread of a rear tire on the Ford Explorer separated and the driver lost control of the SUV, which left the road and struck several trees.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Jason Crespin, 24, was driving and Steven Tarafa, 23, died at the scene just after the 2:30 p.m. single-vehicle wreck between Baldwin and Macclenny.
"The driver appeared to lose control, traveled off onto the south shoulder, spun sideways and struck several trees in the tree line," said FHP Lt. Bill Leeper.
Troopers said neither victim was wearing a seat belt.
The FHP and Florida Department of Transportation Road Rangers responded to the scene near mile marker 339. One eastbound lane was closed for nearly three hours as FHP investigated the fatal crash.
At one point traffic on I-10 was backed up for at least five miles. Traffic remained slow going even after the highway's reopening shortly before 6 p.m.
