CALLAHAN, Fla. -- Deputies were posted at the front door of West Nassau High School Friday after a 17-year-old student on suspension allegedly posted threats on his MySpace.com page that he was going to bring a gun to school and kill several students.
When other students brought the threat to the attention of school administrators late Thursday, the sheriff’s office was notified and went to his house. Deputies arrested Jason Cunningham on charges of making threats -- a third-degree felony -- and booked him into the Nassau County detention facility.
Cunningham was released Thursday night into the custody of his grandparents and will remain under house arrest until a hearing next Wednesday.
The sheriff's office and school officials increased security at the school Friday because Cunningham was not locked up, but that was not enough for some parents.
"It's moronic, if you ask me," Robert Manning told Channel 4's Dan Leveton. "If you have him in custody, Baker Act him; keep him in custody; do something to prevent this."
Administrators told Channel 4 that the school was not on lockdown, but some doors were locked that normally are not and additional Nassau deputies were on campus to assist the school resource officer.
Because many were aware of the threat, almost 400 of the 1,000 students did not go to school Friday and 124 others checked out early.
"I have two sons that were afraid to come to school this morning," Melinda Aderhold said.
"They're scared. They don't want to be here," Sheree Hall said of her children. "You never know what these kids are going to do."
Nassau County officials said the Cunningham's MySpace page was removed, but investigators said they were seeking a subpoena to obtain a copy of the student's Web page.
"With all that's going on in the world today ... colleges, you know. You want nobody to say, 'Why didn't we do something about it the day before?'" another parent said. "I just think the system has failed."
