POSTED: Monday, February 25, 2008
MIAMI -- A man bitten by a shark Sunday morning while on a dive near Fort Lauderdale has died.
The 50-year-old victim's name was not released.
The U.S. Coast Guard said he was diving off a commercial boat about 50 miles east of Fort Lauderdale when the shark bit him. The shark got away before anybody could identify what type it was.
It's also not clear where he was bitten.
The Coast Guard received a mayday from the crew of a 70-foot commercial diving vessel at about 10 a.m.
A rescue helicopter hoisted the man from the boat and transferred him to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where he later died.
