Methadone Found In Dead Child's System; Mom Arrested

POSTED: Tuesday, February 26, 2008

After a medical examiner found methadone in the system of a 15-month-old child who died last month, Nassau County detectives have arrested the toddler's mother on charges of aggravated child neglect.

According to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, Brandy Love Edwards ignored suggestions to take her child, who had developed hives and was acting strangely, to the hospital. Investigators said that rather than seek medical attention, Edwards took the child home and went to bed.

Deputies were called to the home in the 54000 block of Cornelia Court on Jan. 25 after the child died.

Toxicology tests showed the child had .18 milligrams of methadone in her system when she died, which deputies said is twice the amount likely to cause death of a child that age.

Edwards was arrested Tuesday morning by the Brantley County, Ga., Sheriff's Office and was being held on $100,002 bond while Nassau County authorities arrange for her extradition.
