JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville police are on the hunt for whoever broke into the Jacksonville Police Academy training track after hours and trashed a number of cruisers in which cadets train.
"They just had a field day. They broke into some and removed radios, light bars, headlights, tail lights. It seems as though while they were taking stuff apart and taking these items, they were angry because why would you take a headlight out?" said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson.
Investigators said whoever broke into the cars got away unnoticed after spending quite a while doing damage.
"They obviously had enough time to do all these different things hey did," Jefferson said.
Investigators said most of the stuff taken out of the cars was thrown on the ground nearby, not stolen.
"They can't do very much with a light bar, other than sell it to somebody who's ignorant enough to buy it. And then, the police radio, you can only do so much with as well. You can't install that without others knowing about it," said Jefferson.
However, the vandals did take a couple of police radios. Each radio is worth about $500. Also stolen was a siren.
While investigators said they want their stuff back, they were not surprised this happened.
"There's not anything that surprises me these days. You've got people breaking into police cars, and breaking into churches. You've got officers being shot at. There's nothing new under the sun," Jefferson said.
