ARC At Jax Beach Is Moving

POSTED: Friday, March 14, 2008

The ARC -- the Association of Retarded Citizens -- is moving.

Because their current 10-year lease is up at their old facility, the city of Jacksonville Beach is allowing the center that serves 28 developmentally disabled adults to set up shop in the city's old parks and recreation building.

"We provide day services for adults with developmental disabilities (for) families here in the beaches community," said Kathy Jackson of the Association for Retarded Citizens.

Builders Care, a charitable coalition of area contractors, is transforming the space to be more suitable for the clients.

Among the needed changes to the building: converting all restrooms to be handicapped-accessible.

"We have a washer and dryer that are going in for the daily needs there and a kitchen space so the guys can have their lunches done," Jackson said.

If you have a loved one living with a mental disability, there are facilities available at Jacksonville Beach and in St. Augustine:
  • The ARC at Jacksonville Beach, 321 Penman Road
  • The ARC of the St Johns, 2101 ARC Drive in St. Augustine
